Srebrenik: A Fortress of History and Growing Tourism

* The Old Town of Srebrenik, a fortress perched above the town of the same name, is located north of Tuzla. This strategic location, at the "gate of Bosnia," was the site of conflicts during the Middle Ages, where battles were fought between Bosnia, Hungary, and later the Ottoman Empire. On February 15, 1333, Ban Stjepan II Kotromanić, the uncle of the first king of medieval Bosnia, Tvrtko I Kotromanić, issued a charter to the people of Dubrovnik from this very fortress. The charter, written in the old Bosnian script known as "bosančica," marked the cession of Ston and Pelješac in exchange for certain concessions. Although the first written records of ancient Srebrenik date back to 683, the town was built much earlier, though the exact date of construction is unknown.

In the shadow of this fortress, Tvrtko I Kotromanić won his first major victory against the Hungarian king Lajos in September 1363. The Hungarian king suffered a crushing defeat, and during the chaos, the state seal was lost. Tvrtko's victory not only solidified his position as Ban but also strengthened his standing within his family and among the nobility. The fortress frequently changed hands between Hungarian and Bosnian forces, as it was situated at a crucial crossroads between the lowland and mountainous regions of Bosnia.
